Job Opening: Development Director

This is a unique opportunity for a truly talented individual. It is a full-time exempt position that reports to the Executive Director. The ideal candidate is passionate about Mindfulness and Nonviolent Communication and eager to work as a member of a small, dedicated team.

Founded in 1999, Freedom Project strengthens our community through supporting the transformation of prisoners into peacemakers. We offer trainings in concrete skills of nonviolence, leading to reconciliation with our loved ones, the community, and ourselves. Our work addresses the healing of relationships ruptured by violence and forging of community founded on genuine safety through connection.

We do this by offering facilitated classes in Mindfulness and Nonviolent Communication at multiple Washington state prison sites. Volunteers go to these prisons weekly and work with prisoners and inside facilitators to encourage this learning. Upon completing their sentences individuals are encouraged to participate in Freedom Project sponsored activities such as a Returnee Circles and/or a Community Circles.

Major Responsibilities

Special Emphasis on Corporate Giving Program:

  • Develop from the ground up, implement, and promote a multi-channel corporate partner program with a focus on corporate sponsorships.
  • Oversee fulfillment of corporate benefits, including managing a system for securing, tracking, and acknowledging in-kind donations.
  • Develop and implement new strategies to encourage participation in workplace giving and corporate matching gifts.

Communications and Events:

  • Coordinate with the communications committee to develop and carry out a year-long development communications plan.
  • Represent Freedom Project at workplace giving events, and other community outreach and special events.
  • Write compelling content for appeals, stewardship materials and other donor communications.
  • Manage social media content on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and the blog.
  • Oversee organization and planning for special events: Anniversary Party; Major Donors Event to be designed by this position; and an annual community benefit event.

Annual Giving Program:

  • Special emphasis on creating and developing major donor giving program. Develop and implement direct mail appeals and electronic communications.
  • Develop and implement a strategic action plan with objectives, timelines and assessment components for our two yearly annual campaigns, Year End Appeal and Give Big, program including identification, cultivation, solicitation, stewardship and retention of members and donors.
  • Develop and implement new strategies for expanding individual giving including designing, planning, and coordinating donor appeals and stewardship events.
  • Coordinate all solicitations for the Year End Appeal and Give Big Campaigns. Develop and implement a targeted, multi-approach direct mail and electronic fundraising program.
  • Identify prospects for upgrading and stewardship opportunities.
  • Work with the Executive Director and Board to build and sustain relationships with current, new, and potential donors.
  • Manage relationships and communications with donors, sponsors, and strategic partners, and maintain donor and sponsor records and databases.
  • Ensure timely, accurate data entry and donor acknowledgement.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of programs and organizational priorities.
  • Track and report on fundraising data; collect and analyze metrics and prepare reports for internal and external use.
  • Supervise volunteers and interns, as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Core competencies:

  • Expert knowledge of fundraising principles from the individual, corporate and major gifts perspectives.

  • Prior demonstrated grant writing success.
  • Demonstrated excellence in organizational, managerial, and communication skills.
  • Minimum of three years experience as manager or director of fundraising program in non-profit organization.
  • Proven track record of developing and sustaining successful relationships with major donors and corporate executives.
  • Proven success in personally soliciting gifts of $1,000 or more from individuals and corporations.
  • Experience working directly with community leaders, board members and government officials.
  • Working knowledge of statewide philanthropic community and their funding priorities.
  • Outstanding communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Excellent organizational skills with ability to manage short term and long term plans and goals.
  • Solid understanding of development principles, protocols and best practices including those related to annual appeals, online giving and gift acknowledgement.
  • Demonstrated professional large event planning experience.
  • Proficient and experienced with Microsoft Office applications; including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Able to work efficiently and effectively with fundraising software.
  • Flexibility to work in an organization with a small staff and a large group of actively involved board members.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree required: English, Communications or Marketing major preferred.
  • A certificate in Fundraising Management is an asset.
  • Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) designation is an asset.

Compensation: $35,000 to $40,000 DOE. Benefits include: flexible hours, 8 hour of PTO per pay period
